The Helvar

Overview

The Helvar are a stone-giant clan native to the Aleron Range, a mountainous region defined by high ridges, deep quarries, and long-established stoneworks. They are physically massive, with bodies that resemble weathered rock in texture and density, and are known across Wendmor as the primary suppliers of high-quality building stone.

For centuries, Helvar quarries have provided the material used in cities, bridges, harbors, and fortifications throughout Wendmor. Their work forms the physical foundation of much of the world’s built environment, even in regions where Helvar themselves are rarely seen.

Physiology

Helvar exhibit a strong size divergence linked to a dominant genetic trait.

Some Helvar are born as grand Helvars, standing roughly twice the size of little Helvars. The grand Helvar trait is dominant, meaning that two grand Helvars may still produce little Helvar offspring. Little Helvars are smaller but remain significantly stronger than members of most other clans.

This biological split shapes Helvar labor without formal hierarchy or law. Tasks requiring extreme strength are performed by grand Helvars, while little Helvars fill roles that demand endurance, coordination, and technical skill.

Daily Work and Quarrying

Helvar quarrying follows a long-established daily rhythm.

Each morning, grand Helvars hike several hours into the high quarries of the mountains. Quarrying is physically demanding and continues until midday. During this time, little Helvars manage logistics, including the handling of Neys that pull trolley carts along narrow mountain rail lines.

Large quantities of food and drink are hauled uphill for the midday meal. Lunch is a communal feast lasting several hours, marked by singing, shared meals, and the drinking of Kelar as refreshment. Quarrying resumes afterward.

While grand Helvars continue extracting stone, little Helvars cut raw material into manageable slabs and load them into trolleys for transport.

Transport and Distribution

Loaded trolleys are driven downhill by little Helvars back toward Alrenfjell. Near nightfall, grand Helvars ride the fully loaded trolleys down the mountain in a fast descent, treating the rail like a bobsled track. This practice is both efficient and culturally significant.

From Alrenfjell, stone shipments follow two primary paths. Some are hauled onward to Stenvik Wharf on the Alven River, where they are loaded onto boats and shipped to Lowhaven and beyond. Other slabs remain inland for use on construction sites throughout Wendmor.

Builders of Wendmor

Many little Helvars leave Alrenfjell to work as builders across Wendmor. Though smaller than grand Helvars, they remain stronger than most other clans and are in high demand for large-scale construction projects.

As a result, Helvar influence extends far beyond their homeland through stonework, infrastructure, and skilled labor rather than settlement or conquest.

Social Structure

Most Helvars are little Helvars. Grand Helvars tend to marry among themselves, which preserves the size distinction across generations without formal enforcement.

Little Helvars are economically essential and socially integrated rather than marginalized. Strength is respected, but reliability and contribution to the collective work are valued more highly than size alone.

Reputation

The Helvar are widely regarded as one of the most social and good-tempered clans in Wendmor. They place little emphasis on relentless productivity and instead hold a firm belief that work has a natural limit beyond which it loses its value. They are not considered lazy, but they are unapologetic about stopping when enough has been done.

Singing is a constant presence in Helvar life, woven into work, travel, meals, and rest. Their settlements are known for frequent festivals, shared feasts, and holidays scattered throughout the year, often tied to weather, season, or simple opportunity. Celebrations are communal rather than ceremonial, and participation is expected rather than exceptional.

Helvar are notably non-aggressive and slow to anger. Disputes are rare and tend to be defused through humor, food, or collective distraction rather than confrontation. Their physical strength is widely valued across Wendmor, and this demand has led other clans to accept Helvar working customs without resentment.

It is broadly understood that Helvar refuse overtime, take holidays at short notice, and may abandon work entirely when conditions are pleasant. Their reliability lies not in constant availability, but in the certainty that when they do work, the result will be solid, enduring, and fully functional.
