The Capren

Overview

The Capren are a goat-like clan native to the rain-soaked lowlands of Safira. Their culture, economy, and identity are inseparable from the herding of Kelmar and the production of Kelmar leather. For generations, the Capren have lived by the principle that land which still provides must not be abandoned.

They are widely known as tanners and herders rather than builders, traders, or innovators. Across Wendmor, Capren leather is respected for its durability and weather resistance, even as the clan itself is regarded as inward-looking and resistant to change.

Physiology

The Capren possess subtle goat-like traits: sturdy builds, dense musculature, and facial structures adapted to damp, cold conditions. Their bodies are shaped more by endurance than speed, well suited to long days spent outdoors in drizzle and wind.

These traits are practical rather than symbolic. Among the Capren, physical form is not ornamented or emphasized beyond its usefulness.

Land and Livelihood

Capren life is bound to Safira, a region defined by persistent moisture, heather-like lowgrowth, and widespread Lazuliberry bushes. The berries are the sole food source of the Kelmar, and the Capren’s herding practices are shaped entirely around maintaining this fragile ecological balance.

Kelmar grazing keeps the land open and treeless, reinforcing the conditions the animals require. In turn, the land provides hides that cannot be replicated elsewhere. Where Lazuliberries fail to grow, Kelmar do not survive, and the Capren’s trade ends.

For the Capren, land is not property to be optimized, but a condition that must be preserved.

Craft and Tradition

Capren tanning methods are the result of long repetition rather than experimentation. Processes are passed down intact, with little tolerance for modification. Success is measured by consistency and longevity, not efficiency or scale.

This conservatism has preserved the quality of Kelmar leather over centuries, but it has also limited the clan’s willingness to adapt when external pressures arise.

The Privation

Across Wendmor, the Capren are known as reliable producers who dislike abstraction and resist distant authority. They are seen as stubborn, slow to negotiate, and unimpressed by promises of progress — but hopelessly gullible.

Investors from Lowhaven identified an opportunity to multiply output through intensive farming. Kelmar leather was in high demand. Since direct acquisition of Capren land was impossible, the land was taken through scams.

Each Capren farm was approached separately. Concrete demonstrations, staged competition, temporary agreements, land swaps, and other tailored schemes were used to scam the Capren out of their land.

They were not sold out.
They were led out, one agreement at a time.

The Capren never acknowledged the scam. Even when its effects became undeniable, they refused to name it as such. Within a short period, much of Safira passed out of Capren control. A leather manufactury now occupies former grazing land, while many Capren work there as cheap labor.

Only a few remote farms with little commercial value remain in Capren hands. The rest of the Capren are scattered across Wendmor, rooted to a land they no longer own.
